Our Shepparton Rotary Conference is no Furphy!
You may have heard the word Furphy, meaning an exaggeration or false rumour, however did you know that word is actually derived from the very city where Rotary District 9800 will hold their District Conference in March 2017.
The word has its origins from the name of the company founded by John Furphy, which has been operating in Shepparton since John and his family moved from Kyneton to Shepparton in 1873 and set up business there as a blacksmith and machinery manufacturer.
Today the company still manufactures outdoor furniture, however it was back in 1914 when the company was producing mobile water tanks which were used by the troops preparing to leave for World War I, that the name became synonymous with mistrust due to the anxious state that troops were in and a lack of clarity about what was in store for them. The name Furphy printed on the sides of the water tanks however stuck in their memories.
This coming March, you may also want to remind yourself of another quote printed on early water tanks:
"GOOD, BETTER, BEST - NEVER LET IT REST - TILL YOUR GOOD IS BETTER - AND YOUR BETTER, BEST."
While in Shepparton, why not take the time to visit the Furphy Museum and experience more of the history of the company and the area.
