Community Conversation

About 70 members of the community gathered at the Boyd Community Hub for a discussion on what Community is all about and how it relates to the unique challenges of a developing Southbank Community.  Present were members of Rotary Club of Southbank, the Southbank Tai Chi group, Boyd tenants, local residents and body corporate groups, Southbank Local News, the City of Melbourne and other interested parties.

At this week's meeting Rotary Club of Southbank will welcome to our club Ralph Mackie, Managing Director, of Mackie Pty. Ltd. who will present to us plans for the forthcoming development of the Boyd Community Hub site at 207 City Road, Southbank with the construction of a 22 story building featuring a mixture of residential, community health services and a brand new park modelled on Central Park in New York!

Nouria Salehi - Afghan Australian Development Organisation (AADO)

The Afghan Australian Development Organisation (AADO) provides education and vocational training in Afghanistan for those with minimal opportunities, particularly women and girls, to develop professional skills thereby fostering sustainable livelihoods.

Nouria is a long-time friend of Rotary Club of Southbank over many years, is a Paul Harris Fellow recipient, and we look forward to working with her once again to support an upcoming project that she will present to the club on this day.

Rotary International Expo Queen Vic Market Sunday July 12th

The 2015 Rotary International Expo will be held in Shed A of the Queen Victoria Market on Sunday 12th July. Clubs from Rotary International District 9800 and others in then Southern Region of Victoria have pulled together to present this Expo of high impact, sustainable projects to showcase to the public and to share with District International Directors, incoming Directors and interested new members.

In the 1930s, Ole Kirk Christiansen, a Danish carpenter, had a wooden sign hanging on his wall that read, Det bedste er ikke for godt: "Only the best is good enough." Today, Christiansen is remembered as the inventor of Lego, the colorful plastic bricks beloved by children around the world. But in the early days of the Lego company, its signature product was a wooden duck – one built to the highest standards, out of aged beech, with three coats of clear varnish. Lego's company history tells how Christiansen used his ducks to teach a lesson in quality to his son, Godtfred Kirk:

Sharon’s Story

For those of us at last week’s meeting, or who watched  Channel 9’s ‘A Current Affair’ last Monday will have learnt of the story of Sharon Chan and her two children (soon to be 3).

With one child with Downs Syndrome and now with leukaemia, a husband (the sole breadwinner in the family) who has recently passed away, and Sharon now preparing to give birth to another child, one can understand the extreme pressure she must be facing.

Changeover night is a special occasion.  It is a night of celebration, a night of renewal and a night of hope for the future.  It is an opportunity for recognising the contribution that individuals make within the club, and to help celebrate the achievements that the club undertakes in the community.
